What information we collect
Information you provide directly — When you request a quote or contact us, we may collect your name, email address, phone number, date of birth, postcode, driving licence details, claims history, no-claims discount, vehicle registration and details, cover preferences, and any other information needed to provide taxi or private hire insurance.
Information from your Uber account (with your consent) — If you choose to link your Uber driver account, you will be redirected to Uber to sign in and approve access. We only receive Uber data after you explicitly grant consent. Depending on the permissions you approve, this may include:
- Driver profile: first name, last name, date of birth, phone number, email address, and driving licence number
- Driver metrics: Uber Pro tier, driver rating, and lifetime completed trips
- Vehicle details: registration, make, model, year, and VIN
- Documents you authorise Uber to share: driving licence image and vehicle registration image
We request access through Uber's Personalized Insurance API using the Authorization Code OAuth flow. You can decline to link your Uber account and still request a quote by completing the form manually.
Technical information — When you use our website, we may collect limited technical data such as your IP address, browser type, and device information through standard web server logs. We use a short-lived session cookie to link your quote session to any Uber data you have chosen to share (see Cookies below).
How we use your information
We use your personal information to:
- Provide insurance quotes and arrange cover
- Pre-fill and verify quote details when you link your Uber account
- Assess eligibility for tiered driver benefits (such as Uber Pro ClearMile Club)
- Communicate with you about your quote or policy
- Meet our legal and regulatory obligations as an insurance broker
- Send marketing communications where you have opted in
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use Uber driver data for purposes unrelated to providing insurance quotes and arranging cover.
Legal basis for processing
Under UK GDPR, we process your personal data on the following bases:
- Contract and pre-contractual steps — to provide quotes and insurance services you request
- Consent — when you link your Uber account, opt in to marketing, or agree to optional data uses
- Legal obligation — to comply with financial services and insurance regulations
- Legitimate interests — to operate and secure our website, prevent fraud, and improve our services, where those interests are not overridden by your rights
How we store your information
We store personal information on secure cloud infrastructure provided by our data hosting partner (Supabase), with databases and document storage configured for UK/EU data residency where applicable.
Uber-linked data is stored as follows:
- Driver profile, metrics, and vehicle details are stored in a protected database with row-level security enabled
- OAuth access and refresh tokens used to retrieve your Uber data are encrypted using AES-256-GCM before being stored
- Driving licence and vehicle registration images are stored in a private document storage bucket, not accessible to the public
- Short-lived OAuth session records used during the link process expire automatically
We apply technical and organisational measures including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and limiting database access to authorised server-side systems only. Uber driver data is not exposed through public APIs or web pages.
Who has access to your information
Access to your personal information is restricted to authorised ClearMile and Walsingham Motor Insurance Limited staff and systems that need it to process your quote or policy.
When you link your Uber account, your stored driver data is associated with a temporary quote session on your device via an HTTP-only cookie. This allows our website to pre-fill your quote form. The cookie expires after 30 minutes of inactivity and does not contain your personal details directly — it references an internal session identifier only.
We may share your information with trusted third parties where necessary to provide our services, including:
- Insurance underwriters and insurers to obtain quotes and place cover
- The Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) and associated not-for-profit companies — see the MIB section below for details
- Uber Technologies, Inc. — when you authorise us to retrieve your driver data through Uber's API
- Cloud hosting and infrastructure providers that process data on our behalf under data processing agreements
- Regulators, law enforcement, or other parties where required by law
We require third-party processors to protect your data and only use it for the purposes we specify.
Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB)
We work in partnership with the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) and associated not-for-profit companies who provide several services on behalf of the insurance industry. Set out below are brief details of the sorts of activity the MIB undertake:

How long we keep your information
We retain personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this policy, including:
- Uber OAuth session records: deleted or expired within 30 minutes of creation
- Uber driver profile, metrics, tokens, and documents: retained while we process your quote and insurance application, then deleted or anonymised unless a longer period is required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as regulatory record-keeping)
- Quote and policy records: retained in line with insurance industry regulatory requirements
Cookies
We use essential cookies only. The clearmile_quote_session cookie is set when you start or complete an Uber account link. It is HTTP-only, expires after 30 minutes, and is used solely to associate your browser session with your in-progress quote. We do not currently use advertising or third-party analytics cookies on this website.
